Artwork by Leila Alaoui from her exhibition Natreen |
What a sad day it is. Leila Alaoui is dead. Apart from being a wonderful photographer - and she died on a mission in Burkina Faso killed by AlQaeda - she was a warm, lovely, genuinely welcoming and caring person. I have come to know her as artistic director of Station in Beirut. Her presence would fill a room, always descrete and never pushy, yet with a commanding attitude that would make you notice her anywhere.
The world is a sadder, drier place without Leila. I offer my sincere condolences to Nabil, and all the team of Station. I am truly very sad for the loss we have incurred.
May she rest in peace.
